- Fishing is one of Australia's largest recreational activities. Approximately 4 million Australians fish recreationally at least once every year. Unfortunately this results in many drowning deaths across Australia. This recreational fishing report released by Royal Life Saving NSW in 2011 and funded by NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts revealed a total of 119 recreational fishing fatalities in NSW from the period 1 July 2000 to 30 June 2007.

- Water is an integral part of the lifestyle of many Australians. Unfortunately, every year, the addition of alcohol consumption with these aquatic activities leads to a large number of drowning deaths in this age group. Alcohol consumption can cause a range of physical changes to an individual and can influence a person's decision to take action but also greatly reduces their awareness of the care required to prevent an accident and, therefore reduces their capacity to save them self once they are in difficulty.
