Royal Life Saving expresses deepest condolences following drowning tragedy in Tasmania.

Royal Life Saving has expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the student who died in a drowning tragedy in Tasmania at Bells Parade.

Royal Life Saving's CEO Rob Bradley says their thoughts are with the family, friends and school. The incident happened not far from Latrobe High School.

Royal Life Saving says unfortunately there are a number of drownings that happen in inland waterways across Australia. They ask all schools across Tasmania to be constantly vigilant when students are in or around water highlighting that inland waterways can present many dangerous hazards.

In the past 12 months across Australia, Royal Life Saving says there have been 76 drowning deaths in rivers. In numerous cases the person was alone. Royal Life Saving's Rob Bradley says river drownings happen throughout the year and peak in January and February.

Rob Bradley said "We're deeply saddened by the death of this student. Any drowning is a huge tragedy and has such a big effect on the community. Our heart goes out to the family involved and the school. This kind of tragedy has such a mammoth effect."

"We are urging all Tasmanian schools to be vigilant when anyone is near water. Inland waterways can be very dangerous for all kinds of reasons including changing seasonal patterns and flooding. Riverbeds may be uneven or slippery. Underwater obstacles such as submerged items under the water like rocks, branches and rubbish can all be an issue."

"The fact that inland water is often flat can give people a false sense of security so we warn schools in general to be very aware that inland waterways can be hazardous. Swimmers may get panicked if they get caught in submerged objects. These areas can be treacherous."
