The International Life Saving Federation is pleased to announce that the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 will be held in Danang, Vietnam on Tuesday 10 to Friday 13 May 2011.

The World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 will focus world attention on the global burden of drowning, with a specific emphasis on the epidemic of drowning deaths in developing countries.

A comprehensive set of conference themes have been identified that cater to all those working to reduce the burden of drowning worldwide. These include:
- Drowning Research
- Child Drowning Interventions
- Emergency Response and Medical Issues
- Advances in Lifesaving
- Swimming and Water Safety
- Disasters and Climate Change
- Regional Perspectives
- Lifesaving Sport and Development
- Partnerships and Collaborations 
- Activities and Occupations

The conference program will comprise a mixture of keynote plenary sessions, concurrent sessions and workshops with opportunities throughout the conference for interaction and discussion.

Innovative field trips will combine drowning prevention themes with the sights and sounds of the region to provide a rewarding and unforgettable experience. You can challenge yourself to:
- Cycle through rural villages to see first-hand drowning issues and prevention measures.
- Row (or sink) a coracle, the traditional Vietnamese fishing craft that claims many lives each year.
- Witness the design, implementation and evaluation of the SwimSafe survival swimming program in a city without pools.
- Learn how a city reduces disaster risk, when storm surges, flooding and hurricanes are regular events.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS / PRESENTATIONS
The organisers of the World Conference on Drowning Prevention 2011 are seeking Abstracts for oral, poster and workshop presentations from a range of sources across the conference themes. If you, your organisation, institution or agency have been involved in interesting research, policy and/or practice aimed at preventing drowning, we encourage you to submit an abstract and start planning your attendance at this important event.  Abstracts are to be submitted online by 21 August 2010 (extended from 31 July 2010).

Vietnam provides a venue that has rich cultural, historical and tourism highlights, and with drowning the leading cause of death in the region, it provides the ideal place to debate global efforts to prevent drowning. Danang is renowned for its scenic beauty, with endless stretches of unspoiled beaches, crystal blue seas and the luxurious tropical hinterland. It is the gateway to the country's most famous destinations including Vietnam's most iconic beach, China Beach.
