The most outstanding Australian Pool Life Saving Championships ever conducted
The recent 2009 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships conducted at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra have been described as the most outstanding Pool Life Saving Championships ever conducted in Australia.
Based on a comparison of the recent World Life Saving Championships National Teams competition held in Germany, the results at these Australian Championships would have seen an incredible twenty seven performances make the A Finals, which is the eight top ranked positions in the world. Leading the charge of Royal Life Saving athletes whose times would have won medals at the World Championships was Jess Brown from WA who would have won the women's 200m Super Life Saver by an incredible 2 seconds. Silver medals would have been won by Sarah Windsor in the women's 100m medley and the 50m manikin rescue, Andrew Bowden in the men's 50m manikin carry and Jane Cooper in the women's 50m manikin carry. Bronze medals would have been won by Jenny Parry in the women's 200m Super Life Saver and Mitch Parkes and Andrew Bowden in the men's 100m manikin carry.
The most notable features of the Championships was the NSW team winning the Interstate Pointscore Trophy for a phenomenal seven years in a row and an incredible 16 National Records being set, this charge was led by Sarah Windsor who set an incredible six records in both the Open and Masters age groups and Andrew Bowden with four individual records and two relay records in the open category.
Not only were the performances of the athletes of world standards, the conducting of the Championships by National Sport Development Officer, Penny Hodgers and assisted by Chief Carnival Referee, Roz Grey and her team of world class officials also contributed to these Championships being of worlds best practice.
National Director of Sport, Gray Parkes stated, "the 2009 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships were the best ever conducted in this country and the standard of competition was the best ever seen at a national Championships based on World Championship results."
Following the competition at the presentation night, the national under 16 team affectionately known as the Junior Barra's was announced to compete in the Arafura Games in May and the national under 19 team, known as the Silver Barra's was also announced to attend an intensive training clinic to be held later in the year. Other highlights of the presentation night was the announcement of the Elite Athlete Squad from which the Aussie Barras team will be selected to compete in the Commonwealth Championships held in Canada this coming June and both Sarah Windsor and Andrew Bowden being presented with their winners cheques from the 2008/9 Pool Life Saving Grand Prix Series.
