Royal Life Saving Australia is urging everyone to take care around water this Easter long weekend, following a devastating summer that recorded 81 drowning deaths nationwide.
While the summer season has ended, drowning occurs year-round with the Easter weekend holiday a known time of heightened risk for all ages and in all locations.
Last year saw the highest number of Easter drowning deaths on record, with 13 lives lost over the four-day long weekend. Over the past decade, 61 people have drowned during the Easter holiday period - an average of six lives lost each year.
Royal Life Saving research highlights that risk is widespread and often underestimated:
- Adults aged 25–44 years account for over one-third of Easter drowning deaths
- People born overseas represent 38% of fatalities
- Drownings most commonly occur at rocks (30%) and beaches (18%)
- Activities include swimming and recreating (20%) and rock fishing (13%)
- More than a quarter (28%) of people drowned over 100km from home, often while travelling
Royal Life Saving Chief Executive Officer, Dr Justin Scarr, said the Easter break is a critical time to stay alert.
“Many people head to regional and remote areas over Easter to relax around the water. These environments can look calm, but they often contain hidden dangers. Conditions may have changed significantly since your last visit.” Dr Scarr said.
“We also know that many people travelling over the holiday period may be visiting unfamiliar locations. It’s critical to understand local conditions, follow signage and make safe choices around water.”
“Always Keep Watch and keep children within arm’s reach, designate an adult to supervise during gatherings around all bodies of water, including the backyard swimming pool. Make sure the gate is in good working order.
“If you’re boating, fishing or paddling, wear a lifejacket. And never underestimate the impact of alcohol around water.”
Wherever you are in Australia, these are our top tips to enjoy the water safely this long Easter weekend:
- Know your swimming abilities
- Always supervise children around water
- Avoid alcohol around water
- Wear a lifejacket when boating and fishing
- Avoid going alone
- Know the conditions
- Swim at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags
Royal Life Saving reminds all Australians: wherever you are, and whatever the season - drowning prevention starts with you.
