Royal Life Saving Society NT launched its annual Stay Out of Pipes and Drains safety awareness campaign on 1st November to remind Territorians of the dangers of swimming in pipes and drains in the wet season.
The campaign, which is supported by NT Government, is aimed at children and families, and is being run across the Territory where wide, open drains often entice children to swim. Royal Life Saving urges parents to talk to their children about water safety, and in particular to stay away from pipes and drains.
The wet season in the Northern Territory is from November to April and is characterised by higher humidity, monsoonal rains and tropical storms, with an average monthly rainfall of 240mm in the wet season, which can cause our rivers and waterways to become fast-flowing torrents.
The wet season is a high-risk time for drowning and it is critical that children know to stay out of pipes and drains.
