This year the championships are being hosted on the Gold Coast, with Technical Officials from 29 countries. Over half of these officials are Australian, reflecting our strong tradition and commitment to lifesaving sports.

These dedicated volunteers undergo training and accreditation so that they can facilitate the efficient and safe conduct of lifesaving competitions. From understanding complex rule sets to making crucial decisions, their role is vital in maintaining the integrity and fairness of the competition. They also play a key role in fostering a positive environment for athletes and spectators alike.

We have had the opportunity to catch up with Jo Teagle, Chief Referee at the 2024 Lifesaving World Championship, to learn what it’s like being part of the global competition.

What do you do when you are not officiating?

I am a Partner in a law firm in the Major Projects and Construction team, based in Melbourne.

How did you get into officiating at lifesaving events?

I started as a teenage competitor in the 1990s in Sydney at Enfield Lifesaving Club and moved into officiating in the early 2000s whilst still competing to support my club.

What's the best part about officiating?

Working with a team of people to deliver competitions, meeting people from around the world and making lifelong friends.

What's one thing people don't know about being a lifesaving official?

Officials need to be flexible and pre-empt the unexpected at competitions and adapt to conditions / circumstances.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2024 Lifesaving Championships?

Seeing friends from around the world and being part of an officiating team making an Australian hosted event a success for all, especially the athletes.
Also, enjoying some sun and seeing excellent competition and performances from athletes.
