Australia’s top pool lifesaving athletes are on their way to Swansea, Wales, to represent the nation at the 2025 Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships. The event will be held from 10-13 July at the Wales National Pool and brings together elite lifesaving competitors from across the Commonwealth.
Two Australian squads - a National Team and a Development Team - will compete in a series of pool lifesaving events, including the manikin carry, line throw, and super lifesaver. These events simulate rescue scenarios, testing strength, speed, technique, and problem-solving in high-pressure environments.
National Manager - Lifesaving Development, Brooke Cherfils, said the Championships offer an important stepping stone for many younger athletes.
“We’re proud to see such strong representation from emerging athletes who are progressing through the Australian Lifesaving Youth Team pathway,” she said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to gain experience on the international stage and build toward future events like the 2026 Lifesaving World Championships.”
Beyond the competition, all athletes play a valuable role in water safety.
“Lifesaving sport sharpens skills that are directly applicable to real-world rescue situations,” Ms Cherfils said. “Whether they’re volunteering, working at aquatic centres, or engaging in community water safety programs, these athletes are using their training to make a genuine difference across the country.”
