As we commemorate 50 years of NAIDOC Week, we honour the enduring strength, vision, and legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year's theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy", highlights the pivotal role of young leaders in shaping a future grounded in cultural pride and self-determination.

At Royal Life Saving Australia, we acknowledge the profound connection that First Nations communities have with water - a source of life, healing, and cultural identity. Our recent report, Enhancing Cultural Connection to Water for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, developed in partnership with Guunu-maana (Heal) at The George Institute for Global Health, emphasises the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge systems into water safety and drowning prevention strategies.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples represent 3.8% of Australia's population but account for 5% of drowning fatalities, with most incidents occurring in remote and very remote communities.
  • Water holds deep cultural significance, symbolising knowledge, healing, and life. Recognising and embedding this connection within programs can enhance water safety knowledge and skills while promoting social inclusion and cultural wellbeing.

This NAIDOC Week, we commit to:

  • Empowering the next generation by supporting culturally appropriate water safety programs that reflect Indigenous perspectives.
  • Collaborating with communities to develop initiatives that honor traditional knowledge and promote safety in aquatic environments.
  • Advocating for inclusive policies that address the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in water safety education.

Together, we can build a future where every community thrives, and every life is valued.
