Join Us for World Drowning Prevention Day – Friday 25 July 2025

Published 17  June 2025

On 25 July, communities around the globe unite to mark World Drowning Prevention Day – a day to honour those lost to drowning and to take action to prevent future tragedies.

Drowning claims more than 300,000 lives worldwide each year, with children and young people disproportionately affected. In Australia hundreds of families lose loved ones to drowning every year. These deaths are preventable, and World Drowning Prevention Day is a powerful reminder that "anyone can drown, no one should."

At Royal Life Saving Australia, we are calling on individuals, aquatic centres, swim schools, and community groups across the country to take part in raising awareness and promoting safe water practices.

Here's how you can get involved:

  • Light up blue: Light up your home, workplace or local landmark in blue.
  • Go Blue Show Your Support: Wear blue or host a blue-themed day or event.
  • Share our resources: Use our free downloadable tools to spread the word or purchase a promotional pack for local activation.
  • Share your story: Post on social media and tag #DrowningPrevention, #WorldDrowningPreventionDay, and @RoyalLifeSaving.
