Queen's 2021 Birthday Honours

Royal Life Saving is delighted that five people who have given outstanding service to life saving and water safety have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List.

Anne Maree Gardiner was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to lifesaving organisations. Her extraordinary contribution includes volunteer service for the International Life Saving Federation, Royal Life Saving Society at a Commonwealth level, across Australia and in Victoria, and the South Melbourne Life Saving Club.

Ann Brett, Joan Lillian Scott and George Scott were all awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). Ann has given distinguished service to Royal Life Saving Society Queensland including as Secretary of the Board of Examiners, 1982-1990.

Both Joan Lillian Scott and George Scott were recognised for their service to the community of Wonthaggi in Victoria, including to Wonthaggi Life Saving Club. They have both been involved in the club since the 1950s.

The Emergency Services Medal (ESM) was awarded to Dinah Boswell for dedication and commitment to Life Saving Victoria, and to the safety of the Victorian community.

Royal Life Saving CEO, Justin Scarr said the awards were fitting recognition of the thousands of hours each have contributed to life saving and water safety.

“The tireless service of Anne Maree, Ann, Joan, George and Dinah has been extraordinary, and we are grateful for their ongoing contributions to keeping our community safe,” Mr Scarr said.

“Each of them are striving to protect people from drowning, making sure people go safely home to loved ones.

“The Australian community are richer for their efforts and we thank them for their commitment.”

Australian Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), said the awards people of Australia the opportunity to recognise and say 'thank you' to those whose efforts make our communities and our nation a better place.

"Through the Order of Australia, Bravery Decorations and other awards we recognise and celebrate outstanding Australians - ordinary people who do extraordinary things for their local community and for Australia,” he said.

"Perhaps the best part of the Australian system is that it is 100% nomination based. All people that receive awards have been nominated by their peers. This means that it doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from or whether you’re known to millions or just a few. If you have constantly put others ahead of yourself, served tirelessly and made a difference you can be nominated and recognised by a grateful nation."
