Training in Drowning Detection Systems (DDS)
Enhance aquatic safety with the knowledge and skills to effectively use drowning detection systems. This interactive online module supports lifeguards and aquatic leaders to integrate this emerging safety technology into supervision and emergency response practices, strengthening early detection, decision-making and overall risk management within aquatic facilities

Each year in Australia, an average of five - six people fatally drown in public swimming pools. In addition, Royal Life Saving research indicates that pool lifeguards perform approximately 7,800 rescues and respond to more than 14,000 major incidents annually. Among these are an estimated 25 non-fatal drownings — serious events that can result in life-long impacts and may have led to fatal outcomes without timely intervention.

These figures highlight the critical role lifeguards play in preventing tragedy and the importance of systems that support early detection and rapid response.

Drowning detection systems, including those powered by AI, are increasingly becoming a critical tool in the mix. With careful implementation they can enhance aquatic safety, complementing supervision and emergency response practices. Developing the skills to work confidently and effectively with these systems will be essential for both lifeguards and facility leadership teams.  The data and reporting functions of DDS also offer valuable insights that can help facility leadership teams strengthen supervision strategies and emergency response planning.

This course provides practical guidance forimage2 aquatic professionals on the safe and effective implementation of DDS. It is designed for:

  • Centre owners / operators
  • Centre managers
