World Drowning Prevention Day 2026 – Unite to turn the tide on drowning
In April 2021, the United Nations declared 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day, recognising drowning as a serious but preventable public health issue.
Every year, over 300,000 people worldwide lose their lives to drowning – including hundreds of families across Australia. Most drowning deaths occur in low and middle-income countries, but no community is immune. Children and young people are most at risk.
This World Drowning Prevention Day, communities across Australia and around the globe are uniting to turn the tide on drowning by raising awareness, building lifesaving skills and taking simple actions that help keep people safe in, on and around water.
[Insert organisation/facility name] is proud to support Royal Life Saving Australia and the global movement to prevent drowning.
Here’s how you can take action:
- Enrol in swimming lessons
- Supervise children at all times around water
- Check your pool fence and gate
- Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
- Wear a lifejacket when on the water
- Know the conditions
- Learn CPR
- Train to become a swim teacher or pool lifeguard
Every action matters. Together, we can unite to turn the tide on drowning.
